The James Webb space telescope has taken its initial image of Associate in Nursing exoplanet — a planet outside our system — as astronomers hail the device’s performance since its launch last year.
Its latest pioneering footage show the exoplanet, called HIP 65426 b, could also be a gas giant with no rocky surface and can not be livable .
“This could also be a transformative moment, not only for Webb but to boot for astronomy typically,” same Sasha Hinkley, Associate in Nursing astronomy tutorial at the University of Exeter, international organization agency semiconductor device the observation team.
“It was very spectacular but well the Webb coronagraphs worked to suppress the sunshine of the host star,” Hinkley same in associate degree extremely agency statement on Th.
The HIP 65426 b exoplanet is six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter and young — relating to fifteen to twenty million years recent, compared to the four.5-billion-year-old Earth.
The telescope, that alone discharged its initial footage in July, has already disclosed dazzling new detail of the Phantom Galaxy and of the planet Jupiter.
The astronomer space telescope previously captured direct exoplanet footage, but in such a lot less detail.
“I suppose what’s most pleasurable is that we’ve hardly begun,” same Aarynn Carter, of the University of yankee state. “We would possibly even discover previously unknown planets.”
The $10-billion Webb telescope could also be a collaboration between agency, the eu space Agency and thus the Canadian space Agency. it's expected to figure for roughly twenty years.
